About
Welcome to Hessen Haus, a vibrant gem nestled in the heart of downtown Des Moines at 101 SW 4th St. This charming establishment has quickly become a favorite spot for locals and visitors alike, offering a delightful experience that pairs German-inspired cuisine with a lively atmosphere. As a food reviewer for Foodjoyy, I'm excited to share my thoughts on what makes Hessen Haus truly special.
One of the standout features of Hessen Haus is its extensive menu that caters to a variety of cravings. Patrons have raved about the delicious schweinhaxen, a traditional pork knuckle dish that many claim is the best in the area. Coupled with an array of hearty appetizers like warm pretzels paired with flavorful cheese dips, it's no surprise that this place has earned rave reviews. The jumbo pretzel is a must-try, as highlighted by customers like Greg B, who emphasized its size and taste.
The ambiance here is equally captivating. Hessen Haus boasts an inviting outdoor patio, perfect for enjoying a sunny day with friends while catching a game on their big-screen TVs. Kirk Magill noted how it was a beloved stop for him and friends, blending fun with nostalgia on “first date” revisits. The atmosphere is infused with a hint of German culture, creating a unique dining experience that feels festive and warm.
For those who appreciate a good drink, Hessen Haus has you covered. The extensive beer selection, including their famous Das Boot, ensures there's something for everyone. Whether you’re unwinding after a long day or gearing up for an epic night out, the drinks here complement the food perfectly, enhancing your overall culinary experience.
What truly sets Hessen Haus apart, however, is the attentive service. Customers have frequently highlighted the staff's friendliness and efficiency, making each visit pleasant. Aaron J spoke highly of how quickly the food arrived, ensuring that your taste buds are satisfied without a long wait.
In conclusion, Hessen Haus is more than just a restaurant; it’s a celebration of flavor, culture, and community. So, if you're craving authentic German cuisine, refreshing beers, or simply a spot to gather with friends, Hessen Haus is the place to be. Don’t miss the chance to indulge in their delightful offerings—your palate will thank you!
“ Such a fun spot in downtown Des Moines, the city has a lot more culture than I expected. I had some great beers served up by Nate, and too many cheese sticks. Would go again. ”
“ I was craving a salad. I've not eaten here yet, so I thought I'd try it out because of your menu and options. I got the crispy chicken salad with ranch. You guys did not disappoint! Very good! Will be ordering again, and I am excited to try more off the menu. ”
“ Although finding parking was a struggle it was well worth it, the food was amazing. We got there well after the lunch rush which is why I'm assuming it wasn't particularly busy. The service was good and the food came quickly. ”
“ This place is quite amazing. I think this might be the best deal in the land for schweinhaxen. Start out with a pretzel and cheese and that's enough food for two. Great selection on the food and beer menus! Great atmosphere. Oh... Let's not forget...Das Boot. When you know, you know. ”
“ Great stop for bikes, brews, and big portions! We biked down to Hessen Haus looking for a spot to park our bikes, grab some awesome food, and enjoy a drink. Not only did we get to use our pub passes, but we also got to revisit one of our old “first date” places—love that. This time we didn’t “pass the boot,” but we did grab a seat on the shaded patio where we could see our bikes, catch the game on the TVs, and enjoy some good music. (Though it didn’t feel quite as festive as it usually does.) If you’re after German-style food and beer, this place has it covered. The drink menu is extensive, and the food menu holds up too. The staff was fantastic—super friendly and helpful. They even talked us down from ordering the massive pretzel (no regrets, the medium one was plenty!). We ended up splitting a medium jumbo pretzel—warm, salty, and perfect with the bier cheese. I had the schnitzel basket with truffle fries and a side of gravy sauce, and WOW... everything was delicious, came out fast, and the portions were huge. Seriously, I couldn’t believe how much food we got. This place has such a fun vibe. I always wonder why we don’t come here more often—it’s a great spot whether you’re riding in or just looking for a fun meal downtown. ”
“ I love this place the food is amazing. Best bloode Mary I've ever had all the other drinks are amazing as well I love the vibe here as well I could happy get fat on the armadillo eggs ”
“ I wish it felt a little more “German” and a little less American sports bar & grille with the music and sports on the televisions but i get it ! The food; amazing! I am not a huge fan of sauerkraut but I can safely say the kraut here is the best I’ve ever had! The beers were awesome; I haven’t been able to get my hands on an Ayinger beer since in about 8 years so I was overjoyed. Highly recommended, very quick and friendly staff! ”
“ Great food and atmosphere. We are not from the area, but figured we would give it a try. Will definitely be back!! Truly not that expensive for being right in the middle of the city. ”
